Chapter 6 "Jee, what was all that fuss about?" Holly thought to herself. She splashed some cold water into her face. "I'm not sick, just pregnant. I can take care of myself, my belly is not growing much yet, I'm pregnant for less than four months" She closed the water tap and thought about Brian and Alyssa's upset reactions when she just came home. "I can understand that Alyssa was worried about me, but why is Brian so upset? He knows I won't do anything to harm myself or the baby. And why did Alyssa wipe away tears? Did she have a fight with Brian?" she asked herself. "They're being overprotective. I'm not staying home all day, because they don't want me to do anything. I'm going to do whatever I want. Next time I'll take my cell with me, so they don't have to worry. Or if they don't trust it, Alyssa or Brian can go with me. As long as they stop saying that I shouldn't tire myself too much. If I would let him, Brian would carry me all day" she thought a bit angry.
She went downstairs to the kitchen.
"Dinner's almost ready" Brian told her with a very sweet smile.
Holly' anger melted away instantly. "Okay, he's being overprotective, but that's just because he's so sweet. I really love that guy. I'm very lucky that I've got Alyssa and Brian to take care of me now" Holly smiled to herself.
Alyssa silently watched Brian and Holly looking at eachother. She was still a bit upset that Brian had yelled at her. She felt instinctively that something had happened to Brian. He had changed. Of course he changed because his best friend had died, but there was also another change. He treated her different if Holly was around. He tried to behave normal, or maybe he didn't even know he changed…
"I'm so glad you'll have more time to spend here, with us. You can help with making the baby room," Alyssa smiled at Brian.
"Yeah. You two can help me decide about the colors for the walls, and the cradle and the closet and the curtains and… Oh, there's still so much we can do" Holly smiled happy.
"I'll get some catalogues tomorrow, so you can start looking for everything you need" Brian nodded.
"Oh, no. I want to see everything with my own eyes. I'm going to the shops myself" Holly shook her head. "And you're coming with me, right?" she asked Alyssa with shining eyes. Alyssa couldn't say no, the only times when Holly seemed happy, was when she was talking about the baby.
"Sure. Are you also coming with us, honey?" Alyssa asked Brian.
"If you want me to come. Or do you want a girls' day with Alyssa?" he asked Holly.
"Yeah, come with us. We can use some practical advice, right Alyssa? If it's up to us, we will buy so many things, it won't even fit in the room" Holly grinned.
After dinner they all sat down on the couch to watch tv. Holly was very tired and fell asleep after a while. "We should tell her to go to bed" Alyssa said to Brian.
"I'll take her to her bed. There's no need to wake her up" he whispered back.
"You're so sweet. Will you also carry me to bed?" Alyssa smiled and gave him a kiss. Brian smiled back and lifted Holly from the couch. She mumbled something and wrapped her arm around Brian's neck without waking up. He carried her upstairs and carefully laid her down in bed. "Sleep well, my angel" he whispered and gave her a kiss on her forehead.
"Alyssa and Holly should never know about my feelings for Holly" he thought to himself. He went back to Alyssa.
"You want me to carry you too?" he grinned at her. She gave him a big hug and they started kissing. Brian decided to stay the night with her again, to suppress his guilty feelings.
In the middle of the night Holly woke up, really sweaty. She had a nightmare, but couldn't remember what it was about. She turned on the light, but it didn't light up. "Stupid lamp" she scolded. She decided to go downstairs to get herself a warm drink. In the dark she went to the stairs, and found the switch with her hand. The lamps at the stairway also didn't work. "The power must be turned off. I'd better get downstairs quickly and find out what's wrong." She started to descend the stairs very fast, she had done it a thousand times before in the dark.
Suddenly something went wrong at the fourth step. Holly stumbled, tried to hold on to the banisters, but she started falling down the stairs. It felt like everything happened in slow-motion. Bump bump bump bump bump. She fell all the way down, rolling over, trying to protect her head with her arms. She made a lot of noise, in the dark, silent house. When she finally reached the floor, she lay very still, dizzy from the long fall.
Upstairs sounded a lot of noise, things falling to the floor. Brian and Alyssa appeared at the top of the stairs, with a pocket lantern. They ran downstairs to Holly, avoiding the sweater that lay halfway down the stairs.
"Are you okay" they shouted scared at Holly.
"Yeah, I think I'm all right. Just dizzy" she said, hardly audible. Brian kneeled down next to her. Alyssa disappeared. A couple of minutes later the lights switched on.
"Must have been an electrical fault, I switched the power back on" Alyssa said when she reappeared. "Are you sure you're okay sweetie?" she asked Holly. She was sitting on the floor, Brian had his arm around her to help her stand up. Holly looked very pale, she was trembling all over.
"Yeah, I'm okay, just frightened" she nodded, and tried to smile. Brian helped her to the couch, and Alyssa got her a drink. "I'm feeling better now, thanks" Holly said after a while.
"What happened?" Brian asked her, still looking worried. She told them that she went downstairs and suddenly fell over.
"I think I know why you fell. There's a sweater lying on the stairs" Alyssa suddenly remembered.
"Who put it there?" Brian asked. "I thought you two never left anything lying on the stairs."
"I didn't" Alyssa said surprised.
"I don't know" Holly shrugged her shoulders.
"You didn't either. We went to bed later than you, and it wasn't on the stairs when we went to bed" Brian frowns.
"I don't care who did it. I'm glad I'm okay" Holly answered.
"And the baby? Is the baby all right?" Alyssa asked shocked. Holly's face turned as white as snow.
"I'll take you to the hospital now. They need to check on the baby" Brian said and stood up immediately.
"Stay here, I'll get you some clothes" Alyssa ran upstairs. They quickly dressed and went to the hospital.
"Why does it take such a long time? Is that good or bad?" Alyssa asked Brian, who was walking around in the waiting room.
"I don't know" he said nervous.
"What if something's wrong with the baby?"
"It can't be. I don't want to think about that. She would be devastated."
"Yeah. It would kill her. The baby is the only thing that can make her happy" Alyssa shivered.
Holly appeared at the end of the hallway, sitting in a wheel chair. "Are you okay? Is the baby okay?" they called at her, running towards her.
"Yes. It's okay" Holly smiled, tears running down her cheeks.
"Make sure she gets a lot of rest. And come back immediately when she loses some blood or if anything else goes wrong" the doctor told Brian and Alyssa. They both kissed Holly on her cheeks and took her back home.
