Hi fellow Holly fans. I'm Doug, and I've decided to create a series of tutorials on how to make your posts in this forum look good. The reason why I'm doing this is because I see a lot of new members trying to use certain features and seem to be having trouble with it, and right now this forum doesn't have any tutorials for that. If you think there are other technical issues that need to be addressed please email me and I'll try my best.So far, there are 5 parts to this tutorial, in order; [glow=blue,2,300] - Basic UBBC
- Inserting Images
- URLs and Hyperlinks
- Image Links
- Email stuff
- Avatars
Enjoy!![/glow]First off, UBBC stands for Universal Bulletin Board Code. It's a modified HTML code(basic code that makes a website) just for boards like this. UBBC functions by a tag. There are pair-tags, and single tags. The majority of the kewl things are pair tags. Unlike HTML code, UBBC tags are kept in these things, [ and ]. These are called brackets. (For general information, <> are angle brackets, and {} are curly brackets.) A pair-tag must be open, and then closed in order to work. For Example; [b]bold[/b] Opening tag just contains the function name, and the closing tag contains a / and the function name. When coded properly, it'll look like this bold and the text turns bold!! There are several different UBBC pair-tags. This board has easy to use buttons on top of the message box. When ever you click a tag button, for instance the "glow" tag, [glow=red,2,300]TEXT[/glow] the opening and closing tag appears, with "TEXT" in between. In order to make this work, all you have to do is change the "TEXT" to whatever message you want. For instance, [glow=red,2,300]Piper Rulez!![/glow] and it'll look like this [glow=red,2,300]Piper Rulez!![/glow]If you don't change the "TEXT" then you'll have a glowing "TEXT". There are several other neat things you can do, but this is the basic tutorial. Use the tag buttons and experiment!!

You were surfing the internet and found a great picture of Holly and you want to show it to everybody? This tutorial will cover how to insert images on to your post. First you need to find a picture on the internet. Once you find a picture, (for WINDOWS based computers only) right-click the picture with your mouse. Your standard right-click menu will popup. In this menu, locate "properties," and click it. Next you should see the properties window of the picture. 3rd item from the top should say "Address(URL)." Hold down your mouse's left button and highlight the entire address. Let go of the left mouse button, then immediately right click the highlight, then select copy. Now you have the picture's source address copied on to your clipboard. Next, we use a UBBC pair-tag for image inserting. If you look at the tag buttons on top, it's the one with the picture frame. Click that. It should look like this [img]URL[/img] Delete the "URL." Then in the space, move your mouse over and right click, then paste. It should say something like blah.blah.blah. For Instance, [img]http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/28/26/12m.jpg[/img] which would turn into this is the image from imdb.com for Holly's page. She looks nice as usualThis method of image insert is called DIRECT LINKING. It's because you actually don't post a physical image, just the address, which in turns tells the board and then your browser where to go get the image from. We like DIRECT LINKING because it doesn't bother us. But on small personal websites, it causes trouble over a while when everyone starts doing it. This is because these websites are given a maximum daily bandwidth (usually), and for each picture or banner you post, you are continuously using their bandwidth!! Pretty soon the webmaster has to pay more to get extra bandwidth, or gets shutdown. So everyone be considerate!! There have been several very good banner sites, that have shutdown because of this. (For general information, this is known as leeching, and you're called a leech) WHAT NOT TO DODi's website, www.hollymcombs.com has a lot of good pictures. But please do not direct-link (leech) from her site because that causes problems I mentioned above. (This is unless Di says otherwise) Let's all leech from big websites!!

Okay people, in this tutorial we will learn how to insert hyperlinks (URLs) and some neat things you can do. First off, let me define a URL. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It's the address of a resource(file, images, medias, etc) on the internet. URL does not only mean a http web address. FTPs, gophers, usenet, and HTTP are all URLs. HOW TO INSERT A HYPERLINK
The tag button above for this is the one with the earth and a white paper. Once you click it, insert your URL in between the tags. For instance, [url]http://www.thewb.com/Faces/CastBio/0,7930,2859,00.html[/url] This is a hyperlink to theWB for Holly, and would like this www.thewb.com/Faces/CastBio/0,7930,2859,00.html and now you can click it!! However, this is kind of lame. So to make it kewl, we can make something like you see on a website where it says "Click me!" instead of a long drawn out hyperlink. It's little longer to prepare, but not hard. Same tag, but with a little modification. [url=http://www.thewb.com/Faces/CastBio/0,7930,2859,00.html]Holly's page on theWB, click here![/url] is what you type. The actual URL goes right after the =. In between the tags itself, you type whatever you want people to click. It would look like this Holly's page on theWB, click here! This is a lot better looking. Now you can click the message and go to Holly's page on theWB for Charmed!!

This tutorial covers how to make a clickable image!! It requires you understand the image tutorial and the hyperlink tutorial. We're gonna make an image from theWB, that you can click to theWB!! I covered this on a different topic before, but it makes more sense here in this thread. This doesn't need to be a 2 line code, but to simplify things, let's make it a 2 line code. First, we insert out modified URL tag, which is the first line. [url=http://www.thewb.com/Faces/CastBio/0,7930,2859,00.html] Notice I haven't closed the tag yet. After the =, I inserted theWB's URL address. Second line is like this [img width=115 height=180 src="http://www.thewb.com/THEWB/Images/Dynamic/i1/CH-HCombs-A_2x3_240.jpg"][/url] In this line, I entered the img that I wanted to use from theWB. Notice I now closed the URL tag right after I closed the image tag. Don't worry about the height and width thingy, I just did that because Holly's picture was too big for the this tutorial purpose, she looks great no matter what anyway. All these codes should turn into this
Now you can click this picture and it'll take you to theWB!! This was called image-linking. The picture can be from anywhere and the destination anywhere. It doesn't need to be from the same place like I did.

Simple enough, how to make an email-link. You can type your email address in a post, and it just ends up there like a text message, like this dude@dude.com. This isn't fun, so we tweak it. For this, we can use the email tag. The tag button for this is the envelope with blue circular arrows. Insert your desired email address in between the tags. For instance, [email]dude@dude.com[/email] which would look like this dude@dude.com. Now with this, when you click on the email address, your primary email client (like outlook, eudora, etc) will open up with an email ready to go!! (If you use a web based email (like yahoo, hotmail, etc), then nothing will happen unless you have your email client configured...) You can also tweak it a little like this [email=dude@dude.com]write me!![/email] which would look like this write me!! This is much like the hyperlink tutorial. After the = you put the email address, and then in between the tags you type whatever you want. If you can do this, then you can probably do this..... Everybody get it? You can cllick the image for an email address!! Just in case, here's what the code would look like [email=dude@dude.com] [img width=115 height=180 src="http://www.thewb.com/THEWB/Images/Dynamic/i1/CH-HCombs-A_2x3_240.jpg"][/email] This is exactly the same as the image-link and the rules are the same. The only change is that we use the tags instead of the

[glow=blue,2,300]AVATARs!![/glow]Okay people, this tutorial is about avatars. Simple enough, avatar is the image right underneath your member name. As a member, when you click on the "profile" button, you get to modify your profile. So you can change your avatar whenever you feel like it. It will help you understand better if you read the "Inserting Images" tutorial first.Basic AvatarIn the profile section, you can choose your avatar where it says "Personalized Picture." Double click on the avatar selection, and you should see a preview to the right. Once chosen, go to the bottom of the profile section, and click on "Change Profile." Avatars found on the InternetDid you find an avatar or an image on the internet you want to use? Simply can do. In the profile section, click in the box for "I have my own pic." Then in the long box right next to it, insert the URL for the image or avatar. (refer to Inserting Images tutorial on how to get the URL for an image) Maximum avatar size in pixel digits, are 100 in both width and height, so enter 100 in both boxes or a number smaller if you like. Once done, click on "Change Profile."Avatars you madeDo you want to use an avatar you made? Simply can do as well. (I will not cover how to make an avatar, that's beyond the scope of this tutorial) For this, you need to go to www.uploadit.org. At this website, you can upload your avatar that you made. At this website, click on "Browse" and find the avatar or image on your computer. Once found, click on "Send File."If successful, you should be forwarded to your avatar's own URL. At this page, copy the URL address and paste it on to the long box where you enter your own customized avatar in the profile section. Remember to set the width and height to a 100. Once done, click on "Change Profile." THINGS TO REMEMBER
- Avatars are images, so the same leeching rule applies as covered in the
"Inserting Images" tutorial[/li][li]When you upload your avatar on the www.uploadit.org, make sure the file isn't super huge. Also, read their RULES and understand it[/li][li]All avatars must be GIF or JPG format. Other picture formats will not work[/li][/ul][/color][/b]
